MY STORY

Hi, I’m Erika!

I knew I wanted to be a teacher since I was 13.

Mrs. P was my grade 8 teacher who changed my life. She brought personal books from home for me to borrow and introduced me to Stephen King when she discovered I loved horror stories. I wrote an 87 page story by hand (and on PAPER) in her classroom since she inspired me to read more. I LOVED being in class and recognized her ability to make every child feel special. At 13, I learned I wanted to make others feel the same in my future career as an educator.

Since then, I’ve graduated from the Master of Teaching program at the University of Toronto and completed my Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Studies. I’ve worked with students ranging from toddlers to 8th grade and I’m SO excited to share my classroom experiences and ideas with you!

I’m passionate about literacy, mental health and wellbeing, and social justice. When I’m not in the classroom, you can find me teaching spin classes, spending time with my family, or with a book and my cat. Bringing joy to others is my purpose.

“Attitude – Erika is always positive, and open to new ideas. She is always optimistic and curious. Erika’s basic good nature promotes her showing a respect for all identities and abilities but she demonstrated a respect and gentleness notwithstanding, to students who needed special and further explanation. Erika knows her curriculum very well. She always used effective, clear and supportive language in her lessons. Her background in Early Childhood Studies made Erika very comfortable in the class and not ‘shocked’ by the unpredictable behaviours of middle school students. Erika has a pleasant relaxed approach which is ideal for the junior high student.”

-Carol F., Grade 7 Teacher

“Erika displayed a consistent positive attitude and enthusiasm for teaching and interacting with staff and students. She promoted an environment that was free from stereotyping by gender, race, culture, religion, sexual orientation or ability. Her caring and calm manner, along with her patience and respectful nature, helped her to create a positive learning environment and good rapport with students. She managed a class of 35 Grade 8 students, monitored and controlled noise levels, and ensured students were on task. She consistently set expectations for behavior that were clear, positive and empowering. Her strengths lie in her ability to build positive and respectful relationships and inspire her students to accept challenges and thrive.”
